It pains me to write this post, but Russell Cady, 33, left the world in a terrible car accident on 8/31/2013.
Some of you may have known Russ through his love of cars- some of you may have known him as that guy who leaked the 2015 IRS Mustang pictures. Everyone who knew Russ knew he had a heart the size of his home state Texas and knew that he loved cars with everything he had. I credit my multiple trips (and press passes) to the Texas Mile to Russ, along with a couple crazy nights in Las Vegas.
Here is to you, Russ.

RIP, Russ. Enjoyed your work. Now you can be the ultimate Autospotter from above.

Russ didn't get paid to write about cars. He didn't make any real money, so far as I know, from doing it. He did it because he loved cars.
When I lived in Houston I had the opportunity to spend some time with Russ and he was always so excited about the world of automotive news and always willing to share. While Russ didn't have access to every story, he used what sources he had and put in a lot of hard work to break stories. It's pretty amazing given he had a real job.
This is a great loss for the community.
I could only find one photo of him, which is kind of amazing, because I could find about a million photos he took of various cars. That's just Russ. It wasn't about ego, it was about bringing information about something he loved to the masses.
Godspeed, Russ.

It's a shame to die because of someone else's incompetence behind the wheel. A guy who could drive fast died while driving safely and legally. Drive safe (that means drive within the law, thoughtful of other drivers, and predictably) and watch out for the idiots.

Terrible news. Awful circumstances. Let's all raise a pint to a good man and a true car guy.

I personally worked with Russ for about 2.5 years and he was an amazing guy. I never had met anyone before who shared my same level of enthusiasm and passion for cars and automotive-related topics, issues, etc. as me. He always was able to bring the cars he was demo'ing by the office and it was such a treat to get to see them and that he'd share that with the staff. Truly a huge loss.

This is why my DD has a cage. Stories like this terrify me.

Thanks Matt, I knew you have had some interaction with Russ. Don't feel bad about the picture situation: that's how Russ intended it to be.

R.I.P.
Be careful out there, kids. No matter how much skill or care you take with your own driving, "watch out for the other guy" is still driving wisdom. Other drivers will inadvertently try to kill you. If you're lucky, you'll just spill the groceries, if you're not, you'll end up like Mr. Cady, may he rest in peace and may his mourners be comforted. So be alert, actively look for bad drivers because they will try to kill you. Also, wear your seat belt. Hitting a tree at 35 is a serious wreck, but it's survivable in a modern car.

I had a chance to chat with Russ a few times. Very nice guy. Being taken so young and in such a sudden and tragic manner, well, sucks. I spend a lot of my time reading accident reports and statistics on highway fatalities and I'm to the point that I don't like to drive on highways or at night, especially with my family. Sure cars are safer today, but it seems as cars get more safe, people regress and become even more wreckless.
As for the incident, this bulletin board has a few eye witness accounts, to include those first on the scene who describe what they witnessed. Sheds a bit more light on what might happened and hopefully will help to make sure something like this doesn't happen again. http://kingwoodunderground.com/topic.jsp?w=&s…

I guess I assumed he was driving safely. It actually sounds like he may have been racing the other car. In any case, tragic and ridiculous way to die. Don't drive like an idiot, folks.

Thanks for that. Early to tell, but it sounds like he may have been partly to blame for the accident.

I didn't want to jump to that conclusion either, especially seeing that someone we all knew lost their life and injured their spouse, but some of the eyewitness accounts do seem to indicate a high level of speed two of which hint at what they thought were two cars racing.
A terrible tragedy, but based on the descriptions of the vehicle movements it would indicate that both vehicles were traveling much faster than the posted 35MPH.
